Juayúa Food Festival Tour: Frequently Asked Questions

When is the Juayúa food festival?

The Juayúa food festival (Feria Gastronómica) takes place every weekend, on Saturdays and Sundays, around the town’s central plaza.

What food can you find at the Juayúa food festival?

Grilled meats, pupusas, regional specialties, more unusual dishes, fresh fruit drinks and desserts, prepared at stalls around the plaza.

What is the Ruta de las Flores in El Salvador?

The Ruta de las Flores is a scenic road of about 36 km in western El Salvador connecting highland towns such as Nahuizalco, Salcoatitán, Juayúa, Apaneca and Concepción de Ataco, known for coffee, crafts, murals and seasonal wildflowers.

Can I do the Ruta de las Flores in one day?

Yes. A full-day tour lets you visit the main towns, a coffee farm and the Juayúa food festival. Travelers with more time can also spend a night in Ataco or Juayúa.

Tour Details

Every weekend, the main square of Juayúa turns into one of El Salvador’s most famous open-air feasts. This weekend tour is built around the Juayúa food festival and combines it with the best of the Ruta de las Flores: indigenous crafts in Nahuizalco, coffee in the highlands of Apaneca and the colorful murals of Concepción de Ataco.

The Ruta de las Flores is a scenic road of about 36 km through the Apaneca–Ilamatepec mountains of western El Salvador, linking colonial towns surrounded by coffee farms, pine forests and — from roughly October to February — roadside wildflowers.

Why Choose This Weekend Ruta de las Flores Tour

The Feria Gastronómica of Juayúa takes place on Saturdays and Sundays only, so this tour runs on weekends to put it at the heart of the day. You arrive at lunchtime, when the stalls are in full swing, and have time to taste your way around the plaza before continuing along the route.

Stops Along the Route

Nahuizalco — Crafts and Nahua-Pipil Heritage

Begin in Nahuizalco, a town known for its Nahua-Pipil heritage and its furniture and handicrafts woven from tule and wicker. Browse the workshops and the local market.

Salcoatitán

A short stop in this quiet village with its colonial church and flower-lined streets.

Juayúa — Food Festival and Church of the Black Christ

Explore Juayúa’s central plaza and the Church of the Black Christ (Cristo Negro), then dive into the food festival: grilled meats, pupusas, local specialties and more adventurous dishes, plus fresh fruit drinks and desserts. Lunch is at your own choice and expense.

Apaneca — Coffee in the Highlands

Apaneca is one of the highest towns in El Salvador. Visit a coffee farm to learn how Salvadoran coffee goes from cherry to cup, and enjoy a tasting with mountain views. A zipline is available as an option for adventure lovers.

Concepción de Ataco — Murals and Colonial Charm

End in Ataco, where almost every wall is painted with murals. Wander the cobblestone streets, browse artisan shops and relax in a café before the drive back.

Visiting on a Weekday?

For a weekday version with Café Albania, Ataco and the Santa Teresa hot springs, see our Ruta de las Flores day trip. Want a longer journey? The 5 Days El Salvador Tour includes the highlights of the west.
